Fall 2009 Concrete Cube Competition

The Fall 2009 concrete cube competition is to create 3-2"x2"x2" cubes that weigh exactly 270 grams and break at 50 MPa to be tested at the National Conference in New Orleans.

We have developed two mix designs and two teams for the student competition. Both teams used the same strategy to hit the target weight first, and then determine what day we get the target strength at.

The first team has been batching since the begining of August, and has developed a mix design that uses Portland cement, sand, expanded shale, and water.

The second team, after much enthusiasm among UNLV students, was developed in September. Their mix design incorporates cement, fly ash, sand, Geospheres, and water.

Students meet on the weekends to batch at Terracon, and so far these batchings have been well attended and sucessful at reaching our target cubes.
