This certification is for personnel who test concrete in the field. It is an entry level certification with no prerequisites. A working knowledge of the following ASTM standards are required for this certification:

ASTM C1064 Temperature of Freshly Mixed Concrete
ASTM C72 Sampling of Freshly Mixed Concrete
ASTM C143 Slump of Hydraulic Cement Concrete
ASTM C138 Unit Weight, Yield and Air Content (Gravimetric) of Concrete
ASTM C231 Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Pressure Method
ASTM C173 Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Volumetric Method
ASTM C31 Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field

ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet both criteria:

  • A passing grade on the Written Examination; and
  • Successful completion of the ACI Performance Examination

The one-hour written examination is “closed book” and consists of 55 multiple choice questions. The “closed book” performance exam requires you to demonstrate six of the ASTM test methods and provide a verbal description of ASTM C72, Sampling. Once you pass both the written and performance exams you are certified as a Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I for five years. If you pass only one of the exams, either the written or the performance, you have up to one year to re-take the portion of the exam you failed. If you do not retake, and pass, that portion within one year you will have to take both exams again.

Example:
You take the written and performance exams on January 1, 2008 and you pass the performance but fail the written exam. You have until January 1, 2009 to retake and pass the written exam to become certified. If you do not pass the written exam by January 1, 2009, you will have to take both the written and performance exams again.

Certification registration fees include the current ACI Study Guide, review session, written and practical exams. The mandatory procedure review consists of an oral presentation and viewing the ACI video tape of the practical testing procedures. This is not a training session! If you do not have experience with all of the testing equipment, we suggest that you take the Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I Training course that the Chapter offers. (watching someone else use the testing equipment does not qualify as experience.)
