** ACI Aggregate Testing Technician Level I is half of the component needed to obtain ACI Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician Level I. You must also take the ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician within 24 months to obtain the ACI Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician Level I. **

This certification is for personnel who want to be certified as having the ability to perform, record, and report the results of basic field and laboratory procedures for aggregates. A working knowledge of the following ASTM standards are required for this certification:

T2/ASTM D75 Sampling Aggregates (written exam only)
T248/ASTM C702 Reducing Field Samples of Aggregates to Testing Size
T11/ASTM C117 Test Methods for Materials Finer Than 75-u (No. 200) Sieve in Mineral Aggregates by Washing
T27/ASTM C136 Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates
T85/ASTM C127 Specific Gravity and Absorption of Coarse Aggregates
T84/ASTM C128 Specific Gravity and Absorption of Fine Aggregates
T255/ASTM C566
Test Method for Total Moisture Content of Aggregate by Drying
T21/ASTM C40 Test Method for Organic Impurities in Fine Aggregate for Concrete

ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet both criteria:

  • A passing grade on the Written Examination; and
  • Successful completion of the ACI Performance Examination

The two-hour written examination is “open book” and consists of 100 multiple choice questions. The performance exam, which is “closed book”, requires actual demonstration of the required ASTM Standards. Once you pass both the written and performance exam you are certified as a Aggregate Testing Technician Level I for five years. If you pass only one of the exams, either the written or the performance, you have up to one year to retake the portion of the exam you failed. If you do not retake, and pass, that portion within one year you will have to take both exams again.

Example:
You take the written and performance exams on January 1, 2008, and you pass the performance but fail the written exam. You have until January 1, 2009 to retake and pass the written exam to become certified. If you do not pass the written exam by January 1, 2009, you will have to take both the written and performance exams again.

Certification registration fees include the current ACI Study Guide, procedure review session, written and performance exams. The mandatory procedure review consists of an oral presentation and viewing the ACI video tape of the testing procedures. This is not a training session. If you do not have previous experience running these tests in the field and laboratory, we strongly suggest that you take the Aggregate Testing Technician Level I Training Course that the Chapter offers.
